Snow, snow and more snow!

Well what a week! Unfortunately due to the very bad weather we were not at school much this week which means we have lots of Christmas activities to cram into the next two weeks before the Christmas Holiday. We started getting our decorations up last week and this will continue as well as making cards, decorations, calendars and lots more. We will also be working hard on our Christmas Performance which we are really looking forward to. We hopefully have time to make some snowmen too.

Hello and Goodbye

We have had a very hectic few weeks since the half term holiday and have begun our topic Colour my World. So far we have already been learning about Bonfire Night, Diwali and Remembrance Day.
However this week has been exciting in a few other ways. Thursday was Mrs Gaunt's last day as a Duckling Class Teacher as she has now begun her maternity leave and has lots to do before the arrival of her baby boy in the new year. We will all miss Mrs Gaunt lots and wish her all the best. She has promised to come and visit us and we are looking forward to Monday when she is bringing her leaving present to the class...
We were very lucky that Thursday was also a day for a big hello as Miss Morrison, our new class teacher came to join us in Ducklings. The children all enjoyed Miss Morrisons first day and all the activities she arranged and are very much looking forward to seeing her again this week.
Log on next week to see our new class members and find out what we have learned about Light and Dark this week.

Ducklings - Their First Bardsey Harvest

Hello

Well, what a busy week we had last week. All the Reception children went to their first assembly at Bardsey School and not only did they sit beautifully and listen, but they also performed their song. We are so proud of them all. It was a big occasion and they all stepped up to the mark! well done.

We also did lots of tasting last week. We all helped to make dips and prepare the dippers and then we used our senses to describe and finally taste the dips. We also tried sour lemons and bitter chocolate. I was surprised to see some children actually enjoying the lemons and going back for more! This week we are going to try some Asian food to link in with our non-uniform day which is in aid of the flood victims in Pakistan.

Reception have also started work on calculations. We have introduced adding and take away. We have been counting how many children choose each lunch choice and then we combine groups to make totals. We have also been taking away one of our groups and counting how many are left. Remember, if you do any counting or calculations at home, keep it fun and use objects e.g. counting how many forks and knives are on the table, how many steps to school from the gate/car.

The children had great fun reading Oliver's Vegetables, they used Mrs Collins veg box to make an allotment in the sand pit and painted some great pictures of all the different vegetables.

So, watch this space to how we get on with our Asian feast!

Reading!

Hello
The children in Ducklings have been very excited this week about reading as they all brought home their school reading book. It was fantastic to see the expressions on their faces when they finished reading their first book and it has been great to see all the lovely comments from parents showing how proud of them you are. We hope you have enjoyed trying some of the activities from your sound book too.

All the Reception staff have been very impressed with the fantasic mark making the children completed this week using both pictures and letters to record what they heard as they went on listening walks with Mrs Lee around school. We also found time to be creative producing musical shakers, homemade pizzas and some brilliant artwork.

Finally we have been practising hard for our first school performance as part of the Harvest Assembly this Wednesday (6th October) at 2.45 pm in the Upper School Hall we hope to see many of you there.

We have had lots of positive comments from parents and staff all around school about how well the new Reception children have settled and how much they seem to be enjoying school life, these comments are really appreciated and we are extremely proud of our little Ducklings.

Thank you

Mrs Collins and Mrs Gaunt.

Windy weather!

Hello

Well, what a week! This week the children have been busy, busy, busy. They went on their first visit to the ICT suite in upper school with Mrs Lee and Mrs Barstow. Their behaviour was first class and they all worked really well on the computers and with their partners! They were full of news when they came back to the classroom, I think they will really enjoy their weekly trip to work on the computers.
A huge thank you to Mrs Crossling who came in with short notice on Friday and worked with the children. They explored different fruits and made healthy fruit kebabs. I hope you all found them in their book bags.
Even though the weather was very windy and chilly we have continued to spend a lot of time outside, a group of children really enjoyed building a structure and securing a waterproof roof, even with the wind fighting against us. They showed great team work and perseverance.
I must mention what a fab night Mr Gaunt and I had on Saturday night at the Raise 1K night arranged by the parents. A lot of money was raised and your generosity was amazing. It was great to see you all having a good time. Hopefully we will be able to give the outdoor reception area a real boost. So many thanks from us all.
I must also mention how lovely lunch times are. All the children have settled into the lunch time routine and their behaviour is exemplary. The Reception staff eat with the children and we are all amazed at how well they are getting on. It was so calm on Friday in the large hall I went and got Ms Carpenter to come and see first hand how lovely it is.
I hope you all found the reading talk/leaflet helpful with Mrs Collins. This week the children will bring home their first reading book. If you have any queries, please come and talk to one of the staff.
Finally, a reminder that Stay & Play is on every Thursday from 3pm till 3.30pm. Please note younger siblings are unfortunately not allowed to attend.
Many thanks for your continued support.

Ducklings settling in well!

Hello Everyone!

Well we are now in full days and all the children have settled into their new classroom. We have been amazed at how well the children have completed their transition into 'Big' school. All are really happy and full of smiles in the mornings and quick to get themselves busy with a task. All ready we have had some wonderful moments, from chasing rainbows in bubbles to rolling down the hill at playtime!

Lunchtimes is working well and all the children see to enjoy going over to Upper School. They are able to choose who they sit with and this has made the daunting task of taking 30 children to another building for lunch go swimmingly. You should all be really proud of your little ducklings. Everybody has commented on how settled and well behaved they are!!!!

We're really pleased with how the new morning routine is working with you the parents helping your child/children choose their lunch. We have had some great maths come out already from comparing choices, finding the most and least popular and counting the number of children in each basket.

This week we shall be thinking about how we look and exploring our faces in mirrors. Look out in the next few weeks for our self portraits.

See you soon,

Mrs Gaunt
